Height isn’t the only massive part of Great Danes. These pups have enormous hearts that are full of love for their families!

Before Great Danes became one of the most popular house pets in the United States, these giant dogs were bred in Germany to hunt wild boar—a particularly ferocious animal. Between their history and their huge size, you might think Great Danes are fierce dogs… but think again. These pups are truly gentle giants.

Today, the Great Dane breed is known for being the ultimate companion dog. They are dependable, people-oriented, and especially patient with children. These pooches make great family pets. They are playful pups that love nothing more than getting some TLC from their humans!

Why We Love the Great Dane Breed

  • Great Danes are lovers. They take quickly to children and are exceptionally good at living with other animals.
  • That short coat requires minimal grooming!
  • The Great Dane breed is a playful one, especially during puppyhood.
  • Despite their size, Great Danes think they’re lap dogs! It’s quite common for your giant dog to hop on the couch with you, or even try to sit in your lap.

Things to Consider

  • Great Danes are giants. They can be up to three feet tall and weigh 135 lbs. on average. With that said, you definitely need a lot of space to accommodate these pups!
  • They may need space, but that’s not to say your pooch should be outdoors. Your Great Dane needs to be indoors with you and the family. In fact, Great Danes that are left alone for too long experience separation anxiety, and can have destructive behavior.
  • Like all dogs, Great Danes need early socialization. This breed can be protective, and exposure to several different animals, people, and places will keep your Great Dane calm and happy!

Why Rescue?

Great Danes are some of the most popular dogs in the United States. How could they not be? They’re the ultimate family pet. Sadly, this makes Great Danes victims of overbreeding—a horrible practice that can worsen health issues in the breed, such as hip dysplasia and gastric torsion (bloat). Help Great Danes escape the horrors of overbreeding. If you’re looking to adopt a Great Dane dog, check out a rescue instead!
